  • How We Got Started

The Doe Network website was created by Jennifer Marra in 1999. Soon she was assisted by Helene Wahlstrom and in 2000 Helene took over the site completely when Jennifer left to have a family.

In 2001 Helene had the vision to put together a group of volunteers to try and solve the cases on the Doe Network website. A group of volunteers was put together in March 2001, since then the organization has grown and continues to grow.

    Our Mission

The Doe Network is a volunteer organization devoted to assisting Law Enforcement in solving cold cases concerning Unexplained Disappearances and Unidentified Victims from North America, Australia and Europe. It is our mission to give the nameless back their names and return the missing to their families. We hope to accomplish this mission in three ways; by giving the cases exposure on our website, by having our volunteers search for clues on these cases as well as making possible matches between missing and unidentified persons and lastly through attempting to get media exposure for these cases that need and deserve it.

We cooperate with several Missing Person, Law Enforcement agencies and Medical Examiners and strive to work with more in the future.

    Organizational Structure

Our organization is structured to provide an efficient way for each volunteer member to participate actively.

    Administrative Team:
The Administrative Team works together to keep the site and the volunteer groups running as smoothly as possible. Each administrative team member has various duties in which they perform to help maintain a working organization.

    Area Directors:
The area directors serve as our localized link to law enforcement agencies. The area directors are responsible for maintaining good communication with agencies located within their area, validation of cases, possible matches with missing and unidentified persons and information we receive from visitors.

    Area Directors Assistant-Media Representatives:
The Media Representatives serve as our localized contact for media inquires. The Media Representatives are responsible for maintaining good communication with local media organizations located within their area and conducting interviews when requested.

    Area Directors Assistant-Researchers:
The Researchers are responsible for fact checking and locating additional information about the cases listed on our site.

    Potential Match Panel:
The Potential Match Panel is responsible for scaling the possibility of each potential match the group makes.

    Volunteer Members:
The volunteer members of our organization work together to help in any way possible. Many of them focus on certain cases or have a certain skill they utilize with the organization. Our volunteer members are very important to us.

    Projects

We have several projects at this time. One is a joint effort with National Crime Information Center consisting of off-line searches for unidentified victims in cases we have selected to send them. Some cases have already been solved; others are on the verge of being closed.

We also cooperate with Project EDAN (which stands for Everyone Deserves A Name) which is a group of volunteer forensic artists who donate their time and skills to create reconstructions and age-progressions of the Missing and Unidentified. The artists' work is offered to law enforcement agencies and is also featured on our Web site.

    Case Criteria

All disappearance cases are for long-term cold cases of persons who went missing since 1999 or before. The Unidentified Victims cases are prior to 2006. The Doe Network does include cases of unidentified victims in our main database, that were located after this time period, but death was believed to have occurred at least in 2006. For deaths occurring in 2007 and 2008, see our Hot Case Criteria

Many of the cases we feature have little evidence available. The Doe Network includes these cases regardless of the minimal clues at our disposal. For full details of our case criteria Click Here.
