Circumstances of Disappearance

Kathryn was last seen at 4:30 a.m. on April 29, 1983, at the Kwik Shop in the 1700 block of West Crawford Street in Salina. A security camera captured her last image (see photo). She bought a cup of coffee and a newspaper. It's believed Kathryn then drove her white delivery van (see photo) to her storage unit at Magnolia and Centennial. She worked for L'eggs Hosiery Corporation and delivered panty hose to stores around Kansas. Kathryn kept hosiery supplies in her storage unit and would load her van at the unit for the day's deliveries. When Kathryn did not return home that evening, her daughter reported her missing.

When officers went to Kathryn's storage unit the following day, they found a pool of blood outside and a small amount of blood on the inside. The door to the unit was open but nothing was taken. It looked as if Kathryn was in the middle of loading her van with supplies when she was attacked.

Later that afternoon at 5:45 p.m., Kathryn's van was found abandoned at Russell's Restaurant, which was closed for remodeling at the time, at 649 Westport Boulevard. The van was spattered with mud on the outside and blood-soaked on the inside.

Authorities believe the suspect is likely someone who knew Kathryn, her schedule and routine. Based on the amount of blood found, foul play is suspected. Kathryn's body has yet to be found.
