Case History
At 16.00 on Friday 21st September 2001 a pedestrian walking across Tower Bridge saw the torso of a young child floating in the River Thames. Police were called and approximately 20 minutes later a Met Marine Support Unit vessel recovered the torso of the boy. The head and limbs had been severed from the body.
Forensic evidence has narrowed the boy's home down to a 100-mile, by 50-mile corridor between Benin City and Ibadan in Nigeria.
Detectives fear the youngster was brought to London and killed as a sacrifice. By identifying traces of pollen in the boy's lungs, police were able to establish that he had not been in London for long before his death. Forensics suggested that his head and limbs had been severed with sharp knives.
The boy swallowed a potion shortly before his death, consisting of bone fragments, quartz, clay pellets and very small samples of rough gold.
The Metropolitan Police's Serious Crimes Group have decided to give the unidentified dead child the name "Adam".
