Circumstances of Disappearance

On July 6, 2004, around noon, her mother dropped her off at Krug Pool with her 13-year-old brother. When she returned for her children after a few hours, her son was waiting for her, but Ashley was nowhere to be found.

After being dropped off that day, Martinez reportedly got into a car with convicted felon Christopher Hart, then 32, who reportedly promised to take Martinez to California. Hart and Martinez had met in the neighborhood where they both lived. They may be traveling in a gray 1995 Pontiac Bonneville with Missouri license plates 377MPY.

Days after Martinez disappeared, Hart was arrested in a purse-snatching investigation in Olympia, MO but used a phony name and was released. Nearly two months later, after Hart failed to show up in court, he was arrested on a warrant. Martinez wasn't with him either time.

Hart exhibited bizarre and unorthodox behavior while in jail and was sent to Western State Hospital for a mental evaluation prior to his arraignment in court. St. Joseph Police Department said authorities have made several attempts to speak with Hart, who remains incarcerated in the Missouri Department of Corrections on a conviction for second-degree assault. Although he was reportedly the last person seen with Martinez, he refuses to speak about her or the location of the car. Martinez may still be in the local area, or may have traveled to Nebraska or Washington.

Martinez's mother does not believe Ashley would stay out of contact with family and friends. No arrest has been made in Martinez's disappearance and Hart remains a person of interest.
