Miranda was abducted by her noncustodial father, Clements Iwan Budiman. A kidnapping warrant was issued for him on July 20, 1999. Her mother has custody of her. It has been established that Clements first took Miranda on a Japanese Airlines jet and flew with her from Atlanta, Georgia to Tokyo, Japan after they disappeared. He took his personal belongings with him. On November 2, 1998, he and Miranda flew from Tokyo to Jakarta, Indonesia, where his parents live.
When Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents flew to Jakarta to speak to Clements's parents, they claimed not to know their son or granddaughter's whereabouts. However, Clements and Miranda are believed to still be in Jakarta and probably still with Clements' parents Clements Budiman is described as a 5'6" Asian male with black hair and brown eyes.He has acne scars on his face and a scar on the inside of his right ankle
