Circumstances of Disappearance

Dye was last seen leaving her residence in San Jose, California on July 30, 1979. She was distressed by her parents' marital problems.

She was reportedly last seen by a friend evening of July 30, 1979, when he said he found Diane on her doorstep crying outside. When he went to console her, she told him of her plans to run away. Her friend spent over an hour trying to talk her out of it, and she asked him to leave her alone, so he left. That was the last time anyone saw Diane.

There was another report of her being seen in late December 1981 by a friend at a shopping mall about 50 miles north of San Jose. She told the friend she did not intend to go home and didn't particularly want her whereabouts known.
