Ten years almost to the day after sex killer Lawrence Sigmond Bittaker
raped and murdered his first victim, the state Supreme Court on
Thursday upheld his 1981 death sentence.The killings, which began with
the abduction of a Torrance girl June 24, 1979, have been described as
some of the most savage in California history.

Victims: Lucinda Schaefer, 16, of Torrance; Andrea Hall, 18, of
Tujunga; Jackie Gilliam, 15, and Jacqueline Leah Lamp, 13, both of
Redondo Beach; and Shirley Ledford, 16, of Sun Valley Status: Federal
habeas, U.S. District Court
Bittaker, 50, raped and tortured four of the victims. Most were
strangled; two were stabbed in the head with ice picks.
Schaefer was last seen in California on June 24, 1979, as she was walking back to her grandmother’s house, after a Christian youth meeting at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.
Serial killers Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris confessed to her abduction and homicide. She has never been located.
