Stephen was last seen on Dyke Road, Galway at 4am on the 15th December 2009. He has a distinctive tattoo of the Zodiac on his chest and a celtic tattoo on his right forearm. Also has scarring marks to his arms and legs. However Mr Whelan was not reported missing until some two weeks later, as it was not unusual for him to travel to other parts of the country on occasion. A Garda spokesperson said that there is mounting concern for Mr Whelan’s welfare as he has not been seen and has not drawn down any social welfare since December. The search for Stephen Whelan has concentrated on inland areas, and coastal searches were conducted around the city and surrounding areas. The Garda helicopter will be deployed in the city tomorrow morning as part of a major search of the bay and Galway’s waterways for any sign of the missing man. The Garda spokesperson said that the water searches were just one part of the investigation into Mr Whelan’s disappearance, and appealed to Mr Whelan to make contact himself with gardaí.
