Genette was delivering newspapers in her home village of Aylesbeare in Devonshire which is eight miles east of Exeter, on Saturday August 19, 1978 when she vanished. Her bicycle was found lying in the road by two girls who had been walking down the lane with her just minutes before. The newspapers she was delivering had been scattered on the road. Genette had only carried out the newspaper round because she was filling in for the regular paper boy who was on holiday.
The possibility of Genette having run away was ruled out after it was realized she took no possessions from her room at home. She also left behind any money she had in that room. The money collected from the customers on the paper route was still in her purse in the front carrier of her bike. A traffic accident/hit-and-run was ruled out since there were no tire marks on the road and the bicycle did not show any damage. Kidnapping was not a possibility because Genette's family was not wealthy and no ransom demands were made.
