Monica Riordan was reported missing by her partner Keith Wynne on the evening of December 21, 2011. He last spoke to her on the phone at 11am on December 20 while she was at work and she told him that she was fine. However, she did not answer or return his calls later in the day. She was last seen on December 20 at St John Rogerson's Quay after leaving the office of the Government agency Pobal on Holles Street where she worked. Mr Wynne said that Ms Riordan had an alcohol problem. He told the coroner that he thought she may have gone on a "bender". Sergeant Francis Byrne told the court that Ms Riordan called 999 five times on the day and initially told the responder that she was feeling suicidal. Sgt Byrne said that her movements recorded on CCTV appeared "uncoordinated" and "haphazard". She was last seen heading into a cul-de-sac where the only open side leads directly out into the River Liffey, he said. Her handbag and her credit card have been found in the River Liffey. Her mobile phone was handed into gardai after it was found near the Grand Canal at about 5.30pm that day.
