Circumstances of Disappearance

Sandra Collins went missing on Monday the 4th December 2000 from the small village of Killala, Co. Mayo. She had lived in the village with her Aunt who she looked after for a number of years. Sandra left her Aunt's house at Courthouse Street, Killala on the Monday evening at 7.30 pm. At 7.45pm she arrived at a local shop where she bought some groceries for her Aunt and a neighbour. She was last seen at the local takeaway, called Country Kitchen, at around 11:15pm that night. Four days later on the 8th December 2000 her fleece was found on the pier in Killala. A half pound of sausages that Sandra bought in the shop earlier where still in the pocket of the fleece. Law enforcement believe that a white van was in Killala around the time of Collins’ disappearance. When Sandra arrived at the Chipper her clothing was dry despite the fact that the night was wet and windy. Nobody knows where was Sandra for the intervening period between 7.45pm and 11.15pm. It is unknown where she went after the chipper too. The day she went missing, she made phone calls from a phone kiosk located outside a local shop called McGregor's, but yet, law enforcement have not clue concerning the person(s) she called. In 2011, a man was arrested in the Ballina area in connection with her disappearance. A woman was detained too, prior to this arrest, but released later without charge. In 2014, her boyfriend Martin Earley of Banagher was charged with her murder but acquitted by direction of the judge, following an 18-day trial. In 2018, Sandra's brother received an anonymous letter. In 2021, the investigation is still going on. It is believed that she is buried within a 10km radius of Killala. At the time there was a search and rescue mission concentrating at the sea and people may have presumed she drowned.
