Circumstances of Disappearance
Maria Aprile, a stay at home mother with a husband and two children, disappeared from the San Giuseppe area on October 25, 1998.
On the morning of her disappearance, her husband brought the children to the grandparents. He came back home at 9.30 to take some tools he had forgotten, Maria was then drying her hair in the bathroom. He then left again.
He came back again at 12.30, and noticed his wife had disappeared. Two suitcases, a cellular phone, a battery charger, some clothing and money between 300.000 to one million lires were missing. No one saw her leave house, though the house was in the center of the city. At the time there was no train and the bus left only in the afternoon, so she would have had to leave by car.
There were inconsistencies in the husbands story: the tools mentioned were incompatible with the kind of work he claimed he did. According to friends, the husband didn't let Maria go out much, there were also stories of physical abuse.
Her husband is the prime suspect in the case, as well as in the death of his own mother, previously ruled a suicide.
