Circumstances of Disappearance

Josephine Dullard met with friends in Dublin on November 9, 1995, and was supposed to catch a bus and return home by Thursday evening. However, she got slightly sidetracked chatting with her friends, and she missed the last bus. She was last seen hitchhiking from Dublin to her home in Callan, which she shared with her sister. She hitched several rides until she got to the town of Moone, which was 40 miles from her home. She called a friend from a phone booth at 11:37 that night informing her of what had happened and said she might try to get to the town of Carlow which was within 10 miles because she had a friend who might put her up for the night. She told her friend that a lift had just pulled up and she hung up the phone. That was the last time she was seen. A short time later, a woman matching her description was seen leaning in the back door of a dark colored car, possibly a Toyota Carina which had stopped about 50 yards from the phone booth where she made the call. The driver or occupants of this Toyota Carina type car have never been traced. Josephine Dullard, known as Jo Jo, was born in Callan, Co Kilkenny. Her disappearance may be related to several other disappearances of women around the time. The Jo Jo Dullard Memorial Trust was founded in 1997 by Mary Phelan, Jo Jo’s sister, and Mna Cuan an Caislean, the Castlecove Women’s Group.

On 19 October 2020 the Garda announced that the case has been upgraded to that of murder.
