Project EDAN Assists Campbell County, Tennessee Sheriff's Department In Unidentified Victims' Cases
Project EDAN is providing facial reconstructions and sketches of two unidentified female homicide victims discovered in Campbell County, Tennessee in the late 1990s. Both women were located off Interstate 75.
The first unidentified victim was discovered in January 1997 by a motorist near the Stinking Creek Road exit of I-75. She is believed to be a Native American or Hispanic female who was approximately 35 - 45 years of age. The woman died as the result of a stab wound. Authorities stated that they have a general idea of how the woman may have appeared when alive. The Doe Network currently features sketches of the woman as drawn by Co-Administrator Liz Chipman. The victim was believed to have been killed three to four days prior to discovery. She had black hair and brown eyes. The woman also had seven tattoos on her body. She was discovered naked except for a bra and shirt wrapped around her neck. The victim had a hysterectomy.
Additional details are available at The Doe Network's Case Files:
The second unidentified victim was located in October 1998 near the same vicinity as the first unidentified woman. Her remains were partially decomposed by the time of discovery. The Doe Network's Media Director, Todd Matthews, said that Project EDAN will consult with an anthropologist to confirm details of her case. The victim is believed to have been African-American. Investigators said she appeared to be under the age of 40. The victim died as the result of a gunshot wound to the head from a .25-caliber pistol.
Matthews consulted with Dr. Joe T. Upton, DDS from Livingston, Tennessee regarding the woman's dental work. According to Dr. Upton, the victim's dentition was consistent with a that of a female in her thirties. Her teeth were crowded, which would cause the appearance of a 'smile' while she was speaking. Dr. Upton mentioned that the woman may have covered her mouth while talking to others in an effort to disguise the appearance of her teeth.
An official with the Campbell County Sheriff's Department stated that a possible serial killer worked the area of I-75 in the late 1990s. Authorities believe the murderer(s) may have picked up victims from nearby establishments and and disposed of the remains off of the interstate.
Project EDAN was created during the spring of 2001. Professional forensic artists donate their services to agencies to assist with unsolved cases.
