Circumstances of Disappearance
Branch was returning from a weekend in Santa Barbara, California with three friends on December 6, 1992. The group departed from Santa Barbara Airport at approximately 12:00 PM.
They were aboard a single-engine Piper Archer airplane at the time. The last communication from the aircraft was received eight minutes later. The plane was en route to Palo Alto, California but never arrived as scheduled.

Authorities described the weather at the time of the plane's departure as treacherous. The pilot did not give any indication that something was wrong on board the aircraft.

An extensive search of the area produced no clues as to the plane's location. Investigators received a tip that the aircraft had crashed somewhere near the Big Basin area of California, but no evidence was discovered.
