Circumstances of Disappearance
Bennett was last seen in Los Angeles, California on February 16, 1983.

John Alcantara, 52, of Downey was charged in November 2005 with the first-degree murder of Robert Bennett, his maintenance-crew supervisor at the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts.
According to witnesses, Alcantara and Bennett drove into the Whittier Narrows area known to sanitation district employees as "the jungle" together, where Bennett planned to confront Alcantara about his performance. Alcantara then allegedly shot Bennett in the head, returned to the scene to dismember the body with an ax, put the remains in garbage bags, and had a coworker dump the bags at the Puente Hills Landfill.
Bennett's body was never found.

Large pools of blood, still wet, were found soon after in the area, near tire tracks identified by sanitation workers as those of a dump truck and Bennett's work truck. Bennett's truck was discovered at a Jolly Roger's restaurant about 10 miles away, and more blood was found on shovels owned by the sanitation department and in a dump truck which made a trip to the landfill that day.

Alcantara confessed to a fellow employee that he shot Bennett in the head and alluded to the crime to others he knew from work, but witnesses failed to come forward because they were frightened.
