Jones was last seen in TownsvilleQueensland on November 3, 1982.
Jones of PerthWestern Australia had been travelling in Queensland since September 1982. He hitch-hiked from place to place meeting his brother from time to time at pre-arranged points.
He was last heard from on November 3, 1982 at 7:30 p.m. when he telephoned his family in PerthWestern Australia from a Bowen Road public phone in Townsville Queensland at which time he planned to hitchhike the 887 km/551 miles to Mt. Isa Queensland within two days to meet up with his brother.
On the day before he disappeared an eyewitness saw Tony Jones drinking with an older man in local hotel.
He has not been seen or heard from since that time, there has been no activity on his bank account and it is suspected that he has been murdered.
In 2003 north Queensland police announced they would be reviewing the possible movement of convicted killers and other criminals in the area in a bid to solve a number of unsolved murders and suspicious disappearances. One of the people whose movements they are tracing is Ivan Milat, convicted and jailed in 1996 for the murder of seven backpackers whose bodies were found in Belanglo forest NSW. Authorities believed it was "unlikely'' the convicted serial killer was responsible for the murder of Mr Jones.
An anonymous writer signing himself "Lochiel'' claimed Jones' body was buried in the bed of the Fullarton River east of Julia Creek.
